Espy Norwood takes work on a ranch in the Texas Panhandle hoping to restore stability to a life already burdened by family trouble. Instead he finds a cattle operation threatened by organised theft, hostile landowners and disputes that cannot be settled by simply riding away. His strained relationship with his son gives the conflict a private cost as well as an economic one.
The novel treats ranching as work rather than scenery. Stock must be protected, neighbours judged and evidence gathered in country where distance makes law enforcement uncertain. Espy’s experience as a troubleshooter helps him confront the thieves, but rebuilding trust with his son requires a different kind of persistence and forces him to consider what he wants to preserve beyond the ranch itself.
