Good Old Boys, The
Hewey Calloway is an ageing Texas cowboy more comfortable on horseback than with the fences, machines and expectations of the new twentieth century. Restless under settled life, he drifts between ranch work, old friendships and family responsibilities while recognising that the open world that formed him is disappearing. Kelton uses Hewey’s stubborn independence and humour to portray the passing of the old cattle frontier without turning either the cowboy or modernity into a simple caricature.
