Book
Immortal
The Eastern Roman and Sasanian empires renew their struggle over Mesopotamia. Belisarius is ordered to defend the frontier with an army assembled from regular troops, allied warriors and inexperienced recruits, while Varus joins the campaign as a freedman bound by service to the imperial household.
The Roman force concentrates at the fortress of Dara, where Persian commanders seek a decisive victory. The novel follows the preparation and fighting around the Battle of Dara, placing Varus within Belisarius’s attempt to hold the eastern provinces despite limited manpower, political interference and the superior reputation of the Persian army.
