In Egypt in 1219, Estienne Wace joins the Fifth Crusade after losing the security and birthright he once expected in England. The crusading army has surrounded Damietta on the Nile and believes that capturing the city will open a route towards Jerusalem and restore Christian power in the East.
The siege exposes Estienne to disease, hunger and violence that contradict the religious certainty with which he arrived.
