In 1840, Jim Hood returns to Whitby with his companion Samuel Comus after years of violence along the African coast. Their prize money should allow them to become respectable, but the Yorkshire shoreline is controlled by two rival smuggling organisations: the Stringers of Bay Town and the Lambs of Ravenscar, whose contraband supplies cities across northern England.
A personal tragedy destroys Jim’s plans and draws him back into the criminal world he intended to leave. Childhood loyalties, old enemies and competition between the coastal gangs force him to choose whom he can trust while navigating theft, murder and betrayal. Survival may require the skills that made him dangerous, but using them threatens the honest future he hoped to build.
