Oswald Forster grows up on the violent Anglo-Scottish border, where raids and blood feuds are part of ordinary life. Taken into the household of Henry Percy, better known as Hotspur, he proves himself as a messenger and squire, carrying sensitive communications and undertaking dangerous journeys through country contested by English, Scots and Welsh rebels.

Oswald’s service draws him into the Glyndŵr Rising and the political crisis surrounding Henry IV. He encounters Owain Glyndŵr, takes part in fighting on the border and in Wales, and is present as the Percy family’s alliance with the king collapses into rebellion. The story culminates at Shrewsbury, where loyalty to Hotspur places Oswald at the centre of a conflict that has become much larger than the local feuds of his youth.
