Battle
21 January 1846
The Battle of Bhudowal occurred on 21 January 1846 as Sir Harry Smith attempted to move his force towards Ludhiana. Ranjodh Singh Majithia used the Sikh position and cavalry to threaten the British column and its baggage.
Smith succeeded in continuing his movement, but the loss of baggage and the pressure placed on his troops made the action a Sikh success. The encounter exposed the vulnerability of extended communications during the campaign.
Bhudowal formed the immediate prelude to the larger battle at Aliwal one week later.
