Battle of Marathon

The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC when an Athenian-led force defeated a Persian expeditionary army. The Persians had come to punish Athens and Eretria for supporting the Ionian Revolt. The victory became one of Athens’ great civic memories and a symbol of hoplite courage.

Marathon mattered because it showed that Persian forces could be beaten by a Greek citizen army. It strengthened Athenian confidence and became part of the city’s democratic mythology. The battle did not end the Persian threat, but it transformed how Athens imagined itself.
