Burma, 1942. As British forces retreat towards India, Corporal Charlie Torrance is given command of a squad of military offenders and ordered to escort a political prisoner across territory threatened by the Japanese advance. The prisoner is valuable to Burmese independence fighters, and an enemy intelligence agent is coordinating an attempt to free him.

Torrance suspects that someone within his own party is assisting the rescue. The journey through jungle, refugee columns and collapsing defensive positions forces him to question both his companions and the imperial cause he has been ordered to defend before the retreat ends in a desperate stand.
