Fortress of Steel

Rome, AD 59. When the son of his commanding officer is captured in Armenia, centurion Marcus Corvo is ordered to assemble a rescue force from men the army considers expendable. He recruits prisoners, slaves, deserters and former gladiators, then tries to turn them into a unit before they are sent east with little preparation and almost no expectation of survival.

Crossing a frontier destabilised by the Roman struggle with Parthia, Corvo must keep his men together while distinguishing allies from enemies in a conflict shaped by rival Armenian claimants and imperial ambition. The mission becomes the first test of the Legion of the Damned and of Corvo’s ability to command men who have every reason to distrust Rome.
