Wartime and Post-war London

London during the Second World War was shaped by bombing, blackouts, shelters, ambulance work, fire service, evacuation and military absence. The city’s danger created compressed relationships and forced choices that would have lasting consequences.

The years immediately after the war did not bring a clean return to normal life. Rationing, damaged buildings, grief, imprisonment and emotional exhaustion remained part of everyday experience, while private wartime histories often stayed hidden.

The Night Watch uses reverse chronology to move from the subdued aftermath of 1947 back into the heightened pressure of wartime London. The context supports fiction about the Blitz, queer wartime lives, civil defence, secrecy, trauma and the difficulty of post-war readjustment.
