Magnus Maximus was a Roman general in Britain who was proclaimed emperor in 383 and ruled parts of the western empire. His career became important in later Welsh and British legend as well as in the politics of the late Roman West.
In John Broughton’s The Great Conspiracy, Valdor joins Magnus Maximus, first in campaigns within Britain and then in the usurper’s war against Emperor Gratian. In Adam Lofthouse’s Tribune and the Sword, Flavius Maximus has been declared emperor in Britain and crossed into Gaul, where the western emperor Gratian is dead.
