Illness, grief and unchecked authority gradually alter Caligula’s relationships and judgement. Executions, confiscations and theatrical demonstrations of power isolate him from those who might intervene. Told from within the imperial family, the novel examines how trauma and political insecurity contributed to a reign later reduced by hostile sources to a catalogue of madness.
