War

Batavian Revolt

69–70 CE

Gaius Julius Civilis led Batavian and allied forces against Roman rule while imperial armies were divided by civil war. Rebel forces destroyed or captured several forts and defeated Roman units along the Rhine.

Once Vespasian secured the empire, Roman reinforcements restored control. Negotiations ended the revolt, but the conflict exposed the dependence of frontier armies on local alliances and auxiliary troops.

The Iron Hand of Mars and Saturnalia use the revolt's aftermath through the historical seer Veleda, captured Roman officers and continuing fears about military loyalty in Germania.
