Cowboy Way
The Cowboy Way collects sixteen Elmer Kelton stories about ranch hands, lawmen, drifters and other people shaped by the working West. Rather than treating cowboy life as a single heroic type, the stories move between loyalty and betrayal, hard labour, violence, humour and the compromises required to survive on the frontier. The collection shows Kelton’s interest in ordinary decisions and changing communities as much as gunfights or adventure.
Kelton’s working background gives the collection particular attention to the economics of ranch life: wages, livestock, drought, ageing and the changing value of experience. Characters are often forced to choose between inherited codes and practical necessity. The stories use those small decisions to show the West moving from open-range mythology toward a more regulated and commercially interconnected society.
