Sons of Texas
Texas, 1816. Military veteran Mordecai Lewis moves his family into the western Tennessee canebrakes and leads his sons, Michael and Andrew, on a foray into Spanish-held Texas to capture wild horses. Crossing the Sabine River, the party encounters a Spanish patrol determined to repel American intruders. A violent clash leaves Mordecai dead and his sons struggling back towards Tennessee.
Five years later, Spain permits Stephen F. Austin to establish an American colony in Texas. Michael and Andrew cross the Sabine again, only to find themselves regarded as interlopers and horse thieves and pursued by the same officer connected with their father’s death. The Lewis family’s story unfolds during the years when migration from the United States was beginning to alter Spanish and then Mexican Texas, setting the conditions for later conflict over settlement, law and political authority.
