Maori and Settler

by G. A. Henty

First published 1891

2.5(5)

Set during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s, Maori and Settler follows colonial families and young adventurers whose lives are disrupted as disputes over land, sovereignty and settlement turn into armed conflict. Travel between farms, towns and military positions becomes increasingly dangerous as local loyalties divide and fighting spreads through areas that had seemed secure.

The novel presents the war through the practical experience of people trying to protect homes, move supplies and understand rapidly changing alliances. Its adventure structure reflects a nineteenth-century British viewpoint, but the setting is one in which settler expansion and Māori resistance cannot be separated from the struggle over who has authority to occupy and govern the land.
