Through the Fray is set during the Luddite disturbances in industrial England, chiefly 1811–1816. Its subtitle, “A Tale of the Luddite Riots,” identifies the main historical frame. Henty follows fictional protagonists whose private fortunes are drawn into the larger events of the age, giving the reader a ground-level view of Luddite Unrest. Henty uses the linked historical events to show how public upheaval changes travel, security and personal allegiance.

Personal adventure is set against the social and political pressures of the period, keeping the history close to lived experience.
