The Haggard Chronicles examine a West Indian plantation fortune after its owners enter British society. John Haggard leaves Barbados in 1780 with Emma Dearborn, their children and enslaved servants, discovering that wealth cannot erase the legal and social contradictions created by slavery, illegitimacy and class.

The later books follow Roger, Johnnie and the younger Haggards through Luddite unrest, parliamentary politics, abolition and a disputed inheritance. The saga shifts from the authority of a plantation patriarch to the consequences borne by descendants who disagree over property, marriage and whether the family can survive without the institutions that made it rich.
