Edgar Blagrove, the English-born son of a merchant in Alexandria, has grown up speaking the languages of the city and moving easily between British, European and Arab communities. When Napoleon’s expedition reaches Egypt in 1798, those skills place him close to the conflict and make his friendship with Sidi Ben Ouafy increasingly important.
The French occupation carries Edgar through fighting on land and at sea, from Alexandria and the Battle of the Nile to the campaign in Syria. He eventually becomes involved in the defence of Acre, where Ottoman forces and Sir Sidney Smith’s British squadron resist Napoleon’s attempt to push north. The novel combines local knowledge, naval action and the wider strategic struggle over Egypt.
