Fergus Drummond, the son of a Scottish Jacobite killed after Culloden, leaves Scotland in 1756 to seek a military career in Prussia. Through his connection with Marshal James Keith he enters the service of Frederick the Great just as Prussia faces war against a coalition of much larger powers.

Fergus serves through the Seven Years’ War, experiencing battles including Lobositz, Prague, Rossbach, Leuthen and Torgau as well as capture and escape. His rise as a soldier places a personal story of exile and advancement inside Frederick’s struggle to keep Prussia intact against Austria, Russia and their allies.
