London, 1891. Three years after the Whitechapel murders, the capital is confronted by another sequence of killings, this time among performers connected with the world of music hall. Metropolitan Police Inspector Maskell and his colleague Sam Vasey are drawn into a theatrical community built on celebrity, rivalry and precarious employment.
As the investigation develops, the glamour of the stage gives way to backstage jealousies, private histories and the harsher streets beyond the auditorium. The detectives must determine whether the victims are linked by their work or by something older and more personal. The novel uses the late-Victorian music-hall boom as the setting for a police mystery, contrasting mass entertainment and public spectacle with the vulnerability of the people who supplied it.
