The Nightingale
France, 1939. Vianne Mauriac remains in the village of Carriveau with her daughter after her husband leaves for military service. German occupation brings soldiers into her home, food shortages, arrests and the progressive exclusion of Jewish neighbours. Survival requires compromises, but Vianne gradually takes greater risks to protect children threatened with deportation.
Her younger sister Isabelle rejects caution and joins the Resistance, carrying messages and guiding Allied airmen across the Pyrenees under the code name Nightingale. Their different forms of defiance expose them to betrayal, imprisonment and loss. By following two sisters through occupied France, the novel presents resistance not only as armed action but also as concealment, endurance and the protection of vulnerable people.
