Beginning in the final months of British rule in India, John Masters’s third memoir follows his transition from career soldier to civilian, emigrant and professional writer. After leaving the army he returns briefly to Britain, then takes his family to the United States, where uncertain business schemes and immigration problems accompany the attempt to build a new life.
Success as a novelist gradually gives Masters financial stability and a new public identity, while American citizenship forces him to reconsider assumptions formed by empire and military service. He writes about publishing, politics, travel and family life with the perspective of a man moving between British and American cultures, completing the autobiographical sequence begun with Bugles and a Tiger and The Road Past Mandalay.
