Deep in the Heart

by Gilbert Morris Book 1 in the Lone Star Legacy series.

First published 2003

4.2(598)

Clay finds himself responsible for protecting a family trying to build a new life in Texas when the region still lies on the northern edge of Mexico. Their attempt to make a home is threatened by violence, uncertain law and conflict over land, while faith and loyalty are tested by the demands of survival. The novel begins the Lone Star Legacy by placing a family story inside the unsettled Texas frontier before independence.

The family’s difficulties reflect the uncertain political status of Anglo-American settlers in Mexican Texas. Land grants promise opportunity but bring obligations to a government whose laws, religion and expectations differ from those the newcomers knew in the United States. The story uses domestic survival to show how personal settlement gradually becomes entangled with the tensions that will lead toward Texas independence.
