Kydd and Renzi return to Britain in 1803 as the Peace of Amiens collapses and the country prepares for war again. Restored to Teazer, Kydd is sent against smugglers and privateers along the Channel coast before the ship and crew have fully recovered from their distant service.
His attachment to an admiral’s daughter offers entry into the society he has struggled to join, but it also exposes the tensions between ambition, affection and loyalty to Renzi. The renewed war forces Kydd to decide which relationships can survive the demands of command.
The collapse of the Peace of Amiens forces officers to adapt quickly from policing and anti-smuggling work back to national war. Kydd’s responsibilities expand accordingly, while his relationship with the admiral’s daughter places social ambition beside professional duty. The novel uses the return of conflict to show how naval careers can accelerate at the same moment private lives become less secure.
