The mission forces the English knight to cross religious and military boundaries at a moment when both sides suspect treachery. Adhemar of Le Puy attempts to hold the crusading contingents together, but triumph on the plains outside Antioch will intensify rather than end the rivalry over leadership and possession of the city.
