Still unable to clear his name, Smiler travels north with a stray dog he calls Bacon. The second novel expands his world from Salisbury Plain to remote lochs, farms and estates. It combines a young fugitive’s moral development with a portrait of Highland isolation in the early 1970s, when distance and limited communication could still offer both refuge and danger.
