An insurance company asks Rex Carver to recover an antique gold bracelet shaped like a python and set with precious stones. The suspected thief has also vanished, turning a recovery job into an international pursuit. Carver moves through Paris, Italy, North Africa and the Balearic Islands as the bracelet becomes entangled with a larger operation involving intelligence services, stolen wealth and the exchange of prisoners.
The third Carver novel places its detective most directly inside the coercive machinery of the Cold War. Even British officials treat him as an expendable instrument, and his resourceful secretary Hilda Wilkins becomes an active participant rather than a distant office contact. Mediterranean travel gives the story scale, but the central tension comes from competing agencies manipulating private crime for political ends.
