Captain John Niel settles on a Transvaal farm owned by the Boer Silas Croft and becomes entangled with Croft’s contrasting nieces, the practical Bessie and the intense, intellectually restless Jess. Their private conflict is overtaken by political crisis as British rule, Boer resistance and armed rebellion transform the countryside.
