Patrick Cleburne was an Irish-born Confederate major general regarded as one of the most effective division commanders in the western theatre of the American Civil War.
After service in the British Army, Cleburne emigrated to Arkansas and entered Confederate service in 1861. He fought at Shiloh, Richmond, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and through the Atlanta Campaign. In 1864 he controversially proposed offering freedom to enslaved men who joined the Confederate army. He was killed while leading an attack at Franklin, Tennessee.
