He Died Old traces the career of Mithridates VI, the king of Pontus who built a Black Sea empire and presented himself as the defender of the Greek cities against Roman expansion. Duggan follows his accession, territorial ambitions and ability to recover after defeats that would have destroyed a less resourceful ruler.

The book places the three Mithridatic Wars within the unstable politics of Asia Minor and the late Roman Republic. Sulla, Lucullus and Pompey successively confront Mithridates, while shifting alliances, massacres, sieges and family rebellions narrow his options until his final resistance in the Bosporan kingdom. The book is also published with the subtitle Mithradates Eupator, King of Pontus.
