Book
The King’s Marauder
First published 2014
In 1807, Alan Lewrie recovers from wounds at his father’s Surrey estate until the Admiralty gives him HMS Sapphire, a slow fifty-gun ship unlike the frigates on which he built his reputation. Ordered to Gibraltar, he discovers that the Foreign Office expects the unsuitable ship to support covert operations against Spain.
Lewrie must create the landing force, boats and transport capacity his orders assume but do not provide. Raids, agents and informers turn Sapphire into an improvised instrument of irregular war, while rivals wait for the overextended captain to fail.
