Book
The King’s Commission
First published 1991
In 1782, newly commissioned Lieutenant Alan Lewrie becomes first officer of the brig HMS Shrike and sails for the Caribbean. The promotion gives him authority but also exposes him to an exacting captain, dangerous coastal operations and the temptations presented by Lucy Beaumont.
Orders then take Shrike to the Gulf Coast, where Lewrie must carry diplomats and help negotiate with Creek and Seminole leaders against American expansion. Naval duty becomes a mixture of frontier politics, fragile alliances and sudden violence as the last campaigns of the American Revolutionary War reach Spanish Florida.
