After discovering her husband’s infidelity, Ellie Endicott leaves him the house and takes the Bentley. Her housekeeper Mavis and elderly friend Dora join her, and the three women drive toward the South of France without a settled destination.
A breakdown strands them in the fishing village of Saint Benet, where Ellie rents an abandoned villa and begins building an independent life among the villagers. Her growing attachment to the fisherman Nico is threatened as political tensions spread across Europe and the prospect of war reaches their refuge.
