Macbeth the King

In eleventh-century Scotland, Mac Bethad mac Findlaích—remembered as Macbeth—is a powerful ruler of Moray before he is a king. The country remains a patchwork of competing regions and dynasties, vulnerable to Norse intervention and internal feud. When Duncan I carries war into Macbeth’s territory, the conflict ends with Duncan’s death and Macbeth’s accession in 1040. Tranter rejects Shakespeare’s murderous usurper and instead portrays an experienced leader attempting to hold a difficult kingdom together.
