Underground Railroad

c. 1800–1865 CE

The Underground Railroad was not a single organisation or route but a collection of local networks used by enslaved people seeking freedom in northern states, Canada and other destinations. Free Black communities, abolitionists and sympathetic households provided information, shelter, transport and legal assistance.

Secrecy was essential because federal fugitive-slave laws allowed recapture and punished those who assisted escape. Philadelphia became an important centre, and abolitionist William Still recorded the testimony of many people who passed through the city.

Passages of Hope uses a hidden room beside Still’s house to connect an 1855 rescue with a modern investigation.
