Widowed Ann Prentice has built her life around her daughter Sarah, but their intimacy becomes destructive when Ann plans to remarry. Sarah’s hostility forces Ann to choose between a possible new life and the relationship that has defined her since the aftermath of the First World War.

As both women form other attachments, sacrifice becomes difficult to distinguish from resentment and control. The novel studies the limited choices available to respectable women between the wars and asks how a bond founded in genuine love can prevent mother and daughter from recognising each other as separate adults.
