Edward of Westminster, Prince of Wales

1453–1471

Edward of Westminster was the only son of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou and the Lancastrian heir during the Wars of the Roses. Born in 1453 while his father suffered a mental collapse, he grew up amid civil war and exile.

After the Lancastrian restoration failed, Edward returned to England with his mother in 1471 and was killed after the Battle of Tewkesbury at the age of seventeen. Accounts differ over whether he died in combat or was executed afterwards. Edward of Westminster, Prince of Wales was born in Palace of Westminster and died in Battle of Tewkesbury.

Anne O’Brien’s Virgin Widow makes Edward of Westminster the Lancastrian husband chosen for Anne Neville when Warwick turns against Edward IV and attempts to restore Henry VI. Thomas Penn’s The Brothers York treats the prince as the dynastic heir around whom surviving Lancastrian resistance gathered during the Yorkist ascendancy. In Toby ClementsKingmaker: Kingdom Come, the restoration of Henry VI and the return of the Lancastrian prince help drive the final phase of Warwick’s rebellion, culminating in the battles that destroy both Warwick’s coalition and Edward’s claim to inherit the throne.
