Second English Civil War, 1648–1649

The Second English Civil War erupted in 1648 while Charles I remained a prisoner and negotiations over a political settlement repeatedly failed. Royalist risings broke out in South Wales, Kent, Essex and other regions, while a Scottish Engager army invaded northern England in support of the king. The New Model Army defeated these separate threats before they could combine effectively.

Cromwell’s victory in the Preston campaign destroyed the main invading army, and the siege of Colchester ended the most sustained rising in southern England. Army leaders concluded that Charles could not be trusted to keep a settlement. Pride’s Purge removed moderate members from Parliament, and the remaining Commons authorised the king’s trial and execution in January 1649.

This phase supports fiction about defeated veterans returning to war, secret royalist networks, Scottish intervention, siege hardship and the radicalisation of Parliament’s army. It also provides the immediate background for stories about regicide, fugitives, confiscated estates and the unresolved moral consequences explored in Restoration-era novels.
