The Long Sword
First published 2014
Pisa, 1364. Newly knighted after fighting outside Florence, William Gold expects to earn his living in the wars between Italy’s city-states. A summons from Father Pierre de Thomas instead recalls his obligations to the Order of St John and pulls him away from the profitable career he had begun to imagine.
The proposed crusade carries William and his companions through Italian rivalries and towards the eastern Mediterranean, where devotion, commerce and military ambition are difficult to separate. Before he can seek glory abroad, he must survive enemies closer to home and decide whether service to a holy cause can redeem the violence by which he has advanced.
