Historical person

William Montagu, 2nd Earl of Salisbury

1328–1397

William Montagu, 2nd Earl of Salisbury, was an English nobleman, soldier and close supporter of Edward III. In 1330 he was one of the men who helped the young king seize Roger Mortimer at Nottingham Castle and end Mortimer’s dominance of the royal government.

Montagu subsequently served in Scotland and France and became one of Edward III’s leading military companions during the opening phase of the Hundred Years’ War. He was created Earl of Salisbury in 1337 and died in 1344 after injuries received in a tournament.

Colin Falconer’s A Vain and Indecent Woman makes William Montagu the politically advantageous second husband imposed on Joan of Kent while her secret marriage to Thomas Holland remains unresolved. Montagu is therefore central to the legal and emotional conflict: Joan’s determination to have her first marriage recognised by the papacy turns his apparently legitimate aristocratic union into the obstacle she must overturn.
