Peggy rescues the stray dog Beau and makes him part of the Alford family, but the outbreak of war separates them when Peggy and her brother Wilf are evacuated from London. Beau remains with their parents and becomes an unofficial rescue dog, searching bombed buildings for people trapped beneath the rubble during the Blitz.

After tragedy leaves Peggy and Beau alone at opposite ends of the country, Beau sets out to find her with Mabel the cat and Bomber the pigeon. Their journey from London towards the south coast combines animal adventure with the experiences of evacuees, air-raid wardens and civilians whose homes and families have been broken apart by bombing.
