Genpei War
1180–1185 CE
The Genpei War was fought from 1180 to 1185 between the Taira and Minamoto clans. It ended with Minamoto victory and the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate. The conflict became central to Japanese warrior legend and literature.
It mattered because it marked the rise of samurai political dominance. The war is associated with clan loyalty, courtly decline, sea battles and tragic heroes. It supports fiction inspired by The Tale of the Heike, samurai family drama and stories about the birth of warrior rule.
