Battle of Gettysburg

The Battle of Gettysburg was fought in Pennsylvania in July 1863 after Confederate forces moved north under Robert E. Lee. Three days of fighting ended with a Union victory and heavy casualties on both sides. Pickett’s Charge became one of the battle’s most remembered moments.
Gettysburg mattered because it ended Lee’s major northern invasion and became central to American memory through Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. The battlefield also condenses the war’s scale, courage, error and loss into a single place. It is central to Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels and to many Civil War novels about command, ideology and ordinary soldiers.
