The Sands of Ammon
Alexander crosses into Asia at the head of the Macedonian army and begins the campaign intended to break the power of Darius III. Victories at the Granicus and Issus open the eastern Mediterranean, but fortified cities, Persian naval strength and the resistance of Tyre and Gaza show that conquest will require sieges, endurance and ruthless decisions as well as battlefield brilliance.
After securing the coast, Alexander enters Egypt as a liberator and founds a new city bearing his name. His journey through the desert to the oracle of Ammon deepens his conviction that his authority is more than human, while his companions must decide how far they can follow a king whose military success is beginning to alter his idea of himself and the empire he intends to build.
