French and Indian War

1754–1763 CE

The French and Indian War was fought from 1754 to 1763 between British and French imperial forces and their Indigenous allies in North America. It involved frontier warfare, forts, raids, diplomacy and campaigns across the Ohio Valley, Canada and the Great Lakes. The war was part of the larger Seven Years’ War.

It mattered because Britain’s victory transformed North America and created costs that helped lead to the American Revolution. Indigenous nations faced new pressures after the French defeat, while colonists gained military experience and grievances. The war is central to frontier fiction, including James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans and later novels about scouts, captives and borderlands.
