Christopher Gist was a colonial explorer, surveyor and frontier agent employed by the Ohio Company. He guided George Washington on the 1753–1754 mission to warn the French from the Ohio Country and played an important role in mapping routes and negotiating with Native communities.
Christopher Gist was born in Baltimore. Employed by the Ohio Company, Gist surveyed and described the Ohio Country before accompanying George Washington on missions to the French frontier; he later served with Washington and on Braddock’s ill-fated 1755 expedition.
