Agrippina the Younger survives a Julio-Claudian family in which imperial kinship brings privilege and mortal danger in equal measure. She sees relatives destroyed, is exiled under her brother Caligula and later marries the emperor Claudius, using her restored position to secure the future of her son Nero.

Her story is narrated by Parmenon, a one-eyed former gladiator and freedman whose proximity gives him a view of both public ceremony and private calculation. As Nero rises, the alliance between mother and son deteriorates into a struggle for control. The novel follows Agrippina’s ascent through the Roman court and the political relationships that eventually make her own son the source of her destruction.
