Rough Wooing
1543–1551 CE
The Rough Wooing was a period of war between England and Scotland in the mid-sixteenth century. Henry VIII and then Edward VI’s government tried to force a marriage alliance between the young Edward and Mary, Queen of Scots. The conflict included invasion, burning, raids and diplomacy involving France as well as Scotland and England.
It mattered because it linked dynastic marriage to national survival. Scotland resisted English pressure and leaned toward France, while England sought to control its northern frontier and future succession politics.
